If the season started tomorrow, who starts?

With the numerous outgoings, it looks set to be a busy summer in the transfers department but if the season was to start tomorrow, who’s our best XI? We may well see a system change but short of knowing exactly what our squad is going to look like, for the sake of this article I’m going to stick with the 4-3-3. My team is as follows…

—————-Alisson——————-
Trent—Konate—-Virgil——Robbo
—————Thiago———————
—-Szoboszlai———Mac Allister—-
Salah————Jota———————Diaz

So in the absence of any new signings, our back five picks itself and I doubt anyone would argue any differently so that’s all I’ll say about that.

Midfield, we really need a recognised DM in there in my opinion, a genuine ball winner but in the absence of a player like that as it stands, I’m going for Thiago. He had comfortably our best defensive stats last season, despite that not really being his game but as we’ve seen, he loves a tackle and isn’t afraid to mix it up. You could also make a case for swapping him and Mac Allister, the latter recently mentioning DM as his favourite position, although I think both would benefit from being part of a double pivot in that role, potentially Trent or a new signing. For Harvey and Curtis, they’ll need to bring their A-game every opportunity they get but that’s part of being at a big club. It will be a test of character for both players, to show Klopp they’re deserving of minutes, although the necessity for rotation should still provide more than enough game time to keep them both happy.

In attack, picking Jota over Gakpo is a little controversial I know but I just feel Jota is more proven at this point in time. His goals simply cannot be ignored and he’s one of our best pressing players. Gakpo potentially has a higher ceiling but is still finding his feet in a new team and learning a new role. As for Nunez, he’s got it all to do to prove there’s a place for him in this team and that he’s not going to become a very expensive version of Origi – a good player but one who just doesn’t really fit with the way we play. I hope he comes good this season and can surely only be helped by the likes of Mac Allister and Szoboszlai, who between them clocked up 22 goals and 16 assists last season, compared to the very meagre zero goals and 4 assists that Thiago and Hendo managed to produce in the same period. As it stands though, I suspect Nunez can expect to start the season on the bench.

That’s it then folks, just a quick Sunday afternoon filler. Let me know who you think our strongest team is out of the players we currently have available. Walk on!
