Newcastle United vs Liverpool

Well I can’t be waiting around for the FA to make their customary decision about whether the game will go ahead a couple of hours before kick-off. I’ve got an article to get out. There is some doubt because Newcastle played City and then a number of City players went down with Covid causing their game with Everton to be postponed. The concern is that Newcastle players could have been infected before or during the City game and if so they could pass it on to Liverpool players. I don’t think the game is seriously under threat though 😉

First though a mini rant at the way the FA treat the fans. They called off the Everton/City match just four hours or so before the planned kick-off. It’s not like the possibility of covid related cancellations should have come as a great surprise to them. The testing regime should have been tied in to the match schedules to ensure there was sufficient time to carry out and process covid test results in time to take a decision at least the day before. I think we can all accept that the weather can cause unexpected cancellations but something like covid could and should be planned for. They should have pre agreed protocols in place to determine when matches will be postponed due to a given number of confirmed cases at a club. The only saving grace in this case is it was not real supporters affected, just City followers……. Then again there is the question of whether City were treated differently to other clubs in allowing their game to be postponed. I suppose it is better to be on the safe side in case it is the start of a major outbreak which might be spread to other clubs. If not though their next game should go ahead as planned, regardless of whether they still have a number of players isolating.

Anyway back to the Newcastle game. Their nickname is the magpies though I only heard just yesterday from one our newer posters steve 🏆 🏆 🏆 🏆 🏆 🏆 that they are also called the barcodes, again for obvious reasons. I should have probably heard that before but, I’ve looked it up now and apparently the Spanish press once referred to them as “El barcodos bastidos” which I like even more;-)

We need to put the WBA game behind us and just remind the opposition and some of our wavering “fans” that despite all our injury problems we are still top of the tree. I expect Klopp to largely stick with his preferred starting line-up (less Matip) but hopefully make more use of his subs earlier in the game by bringing on Mini, Ox and Thiago during the second half. Team: Alisson, TAA, Williams, Fab, Robbo, Hendo, Gini, Jones, Mane. Firmino, Salah.
