We are back on our perch now but the question is how does Klopp consolidate that position and ensure that we continue to win top honours in the game for years to come.

It is possible that just with further development of the players in the current squad we could go on to win many more trophies over the next 2-3 years but then we would be left with an aging team in need of wholesale changes. The bulk of the current team is aged between 27-29 . It is likely though that some changes will be forced on us by player injuries or players wishing to leave. Though they would have to be mad to want to leave at present. Maybe this is the best option making the most of what you have then undertake a large rebuilding of the team based around the younger members of the current squad (TAA, Robbo, Gomez, Keita & Mini). who will by then be entering their peak years.

Is standing still even an option though? Klopp has said that we need to continue to change and adapt because as he points out our opponents will not be standing still either. Do we add some more craft into the midfield to reduce our reliance on the FBs to create our chances? Do we already have those players in Keita and Mini. Or do we invest in a dynamic striker like Werner or even Mbappe perhaps? Or should we look to both improve the forward line and our midfield? Are there other positions that could be improved further like moving TAA into midfield and bringing in another fullback either from the youth side or with a transfer? Was Robbo’s game against Wolves a one off aberration or did it show up some fundamental weaknesses in this game? Jock? Is Gomez going to kick on now and could Gini and Hendo be improved upon?

We could largely develop from within the club by giving some our youngsters a chance to become top players under the coaching and guidance off Klopp and his team. The difficulty with that is whether the players will be good enough as the attrition rate from promising player to fully fledged Internationals is high. Also in the short term giving youngsters game time in the first team is risky to the rhythm and success of the current team. There are very small margins to play with at the very top of the game as Utd, Spurs and even City have shown recently. But if we don’t develop our youngsters for the first team what is the point of the youth teams? Does it Just provide money making enterprise by developing them to a point and selling on whilst providing a structure to get other players fit after injury? Are we better off buying the nearly finished article like Alisson, VVD and Mane or will even that limited amount of development be enough to throw out the dynamics of a team performing at such an extraordinarily high level? Is it even possible to stay at the top for more than a couple of years with the number of teams competing at the top and the resources in the game.

I have thought about this a lot and I think the answer is yes to all these questions. but, more importantly what do you think?
