How the Hell Did That Happen ?

The other title I thought of for this piece is “did that really just happen or did I dream it?” I am of of course referring to the revolution that has taken place at Liverpool FC since FSG got their feet under the table and figured out what football is all about .

I can only speak for myself but although I always dreamt of Liverpool getting back on top I can’t say I really thought it would actually happen to the extent it has especially against the competition provided by clubs with more resources and financial clout. I can’t say the rise has exactly been a fairytale story though because Liverpool aren’t exactly poor little orphans themselves but the turnaround in fortunes and the level reached has been astonishing in such a relatively short time.

There have been various step changes in the EPL usually associated with managers coming along and taking things on to another level. We have seen a succession of visionary managers from Ferguson, Wenger, Mourinho, Warnock, Guardiola and now Klopp. The difference with Klopp though is that whilst he has taken management to another level, just like those other managers before him, the reason he has had such an impact is as much down to FSG or more specifically the way that FSG has taken the overall management and organisation of the club to another level. With the vast sums of money swirling around in the game and years of development and improvements you wouldn’t think there was much scope left to make such dramatic improvements. So whereas Klopp rightly gets the managerial plaudits the real heroes are FSG who appointed him and improved every other aspect of the club especially the marketing strategy and transfer policy to bring the club back to the very top of the game.

Ultimately FSG is the reason Liverpool FC is back on its perch and why, despite very little sign of transfer activity this year, we should give them the benefit of the doubt and learn to accept that they might just know better than most of us how to run a successful football club.
