Liverpool 3-0 Brentford: Back to winning ways
A much needed win then after a succession of draws and a perfect remedy for an anxious fan base, worried about where the goals are going to come from during Mane and Salah’s respective absences.
First half I was a bit concerned myself as time dragged on and our toothless attack from midweek looked to be continuing. I was actually just thinking we need our defenders etc to chip in with some goals while the deadly duo are away and up popped Fabinho with a well taken opener. Not that the finish was difficult but it came at him quickly and he did well to adjust his body shape and nod home.
You always felt we needed that second goal however and chances were still proving difficult to come by, although Jota was starting to look more lively, far more comfortable playing on the left and was unlucky to see his snap shot rebound off the post.
Trent’s patchy form continues but it was his tartan teammate on the other flank that popped up with the assist today, with a wonderful delivery for Ox to nod home. I thought Ox was fairly ineffective on the day, as he tends to be when part of the forward line but with delivery like that, you just need to time the run and tap home, which he duly did.
As for our third goal… time and again I’ve said it, I never understand why lesser teams come to Anfield and try and play out from the back. It’s exactly what we want you to do and it paid dividends once more as Bobby nicked possession and then selflessly set up Minamino, rounding off a comfortable victory in the end.
There were other positives as well, I thought Curtis looked bright in moments, some nice runs and strikes on target. Not afraid to attempt the audacious either, as we saw with his late strike that tried to catch the keeper off his line. Good to see young Kaide Gordon rewarded for his FA cup goal with some more minutes as well.
The return leg of the semi final with Arsenal next then and I still have us as favourites to progress to the final, despite the disappointing display at Anfield the other night. We can’t be that poor again and hopefully today will be a much needed confidence boost.
All in all, we weren’t at our most fluent best today but the win is what matters and we got there comfortably in the end. Walk on.
