April fools

I’m not sure who the April fools are here, whether it’s the players or us fans for still going into some of these games with an air of expectation but it was more of the same.

I can’t really be bothered picking the bones of the game. You could pick pretty much any of the away games post match articles and you’d get the same thing – huge gaps in midfield, minimal creativity, shambolic defensively and Trent being woeful once more.

Do we move Trent into midfield? I don’t know. He’s been so pivotal to our success in recent seasons from RB and moving him into midfield would almost be like Klopp admitting he was wrong but he’s been an absolute liability at the back this season, almost guaranteed to cost us at least one goal a game. Something needs to be done though, we either need to sign a midfielder that is going to provide proper cover on that side or we need to move Trent further forward.

It will be interesting to see if we look to move on some of the other underperforming players, there’s already rumours Matip is on his way and we already know Bobby, Ox and Keita will be leaving. Nat as well but should we be looking to try and cash in on the likes of Fabinho and Curtis as well?

I really don’t know is the answer. I’ve given up trying to apply logic or reason to the incredible drop off in form we’ve suffered this season. What is apparent is that this team is shot, both physically and mentally. Whether or not Klopp can turn it around by next season remains to be seen but he’s got a mammoth task on his hands and if not, I suspect it will be Jurgen’s last season at the club. It would be such a shame for the Klopp era which has brought us such joy, to end with a whimper like that but I guess that’s football.

Chelsea next then and one of the only good things about this season is they’ve been even worse than us. A win on Tuesday is absolutely essential for our dwindling hopes of securing a top four spot but in a season littered with false dawns, who knows what team will show up.

Whatever happens between now and the end of the season, I’m sure all fans would agree that this season is a write off and roll on the summer. Walk on!
