Tempted by Gotze?

Dortmund have confirmed today that Mario Gotze will leave when his contract expires at the end of the season. Given the pending financial crisis and our love of a bargain, could we be tempted to snap Gotze up on a free?

It’s not really worked out for Mario. After bursting onto the scene with Klopp’s Dortmund as a teenager, the highlight of his career would come soon after, scoring the winning goal in a World Cup final, aged a mere 20 years old.

He earned his big move to Bayern, reportedly leaving Klopp in tears when he told him the news. Despite his move to Bayern not working out after serious illness curtailed his development, Klopp still attempted to bring him to Anfield in his first season, only for Gotze to reject his former mentor and sign once more for Dortmund, to try and kick start his career.

The move hasn’t been disastrous but he has struggled to hold down a permanent role in the team, scoring 3 goals in 20 appearances this season.

Not so exciting then, a free transfer for a player who seems to have been in decline for a while. It’s worth remembering however that Gotze is only 27 so should, in theory, be at his peak.

Klopp is a known admirer and Gotze played the best football of his career under Jurgen. With Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc indicating that Gotze fancies a move abroad, could he be a cost effective squad filler for us going into next season?

My preferred choice is Werner but should club finances force us to cancel or delay such a move, perhaps Jurgen could be tempted by one of his former students.
