Sheffield United vs Liverpool

Regular posters on the site will have heard my strange but “true” story about the Sheffield clubs but, with the number of new posters on site, I thought I would share it again. It has nothing to do with the fact that I can’t think of anything new to say – honest 😉 The “truth” is that I like to include a bit of history in match threads and I know that our Cousins from over the pond especially appreciate it, because they have so little history themselves. Only teasing 😉

It is a little known fact that, when the football League was established, there were seven teams from Sheffield, one for each day of the week. It soon became clear though that one City could not accommodate so many teams and it was agreed that they would pool their resources to form a new club that would be simply known as Sheffield United. Late in the day though, Sheffield Wednesday realised they could steal some fans off the other clubs and so they reneged on the deal and decided to go it alone. This was known at the time as Sheffxit and explains why to this day there are two clubs in Sheffield, our opponents on Sunday, Sheffield United and Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. It also explains why there is now such a strong sense of rivalry between the two clubs and their long suffering supporters.

I do think we have had a lot to put up with this season and am not surprised we have found it difficult to maintain our position. I think we have played well sometimes and not got the results we deserved, but other times we have allowed teams back into the game with some slack play. The time for excuses is over and we have to start getting results, relying on our superior attacking skills and digging in defensively.

With Jota back, but Milly and Fab not expected to be fit for this game I am going for this team: Alisson (or Kelleher), TAA, Phillips, Kayak, Robbo, Gini, Jones, Thiago, Mane, Firmino, Salah. Of course Klopp might surprise us and team Kayak with Davies but he appeared to rule that out in his presser. I am hoping Jota and Keita will both get a run out second half too, to get a bit of match fitness ahead of the Chelsea game, when we might also have Milly and Fab available as options.
