Goals

AN ARTICLE BY SUPERSUB

Following a brief convo with Jock the other night, we decided it’d be a good idea to try & break Disqus, by uploading shed loads of vids.  Like on music night, but with footy stuff instead.

There’s been loads of comments lately about ‘the best’.  Best ever squad, who’s the best ever manager..?….Who’d be in the best ever LFC midfield three (😱) etc etc

So, the question today is…….

What’s your favourite/most memorable/best ever Liverpool goal(s)…??

Or, indeed, your top 3,4, 5 or 10 or more…?   It can be for any reason.  The greatness of the goal itself, the context of the match, something about the scorer, a personal link for yourself…….anything.

So, favourite Liverpool goals.  Where d’ya start…?

To kick things off, I’ve decided to narrow things down a bit to make it easier for myself (still not easy) & select 5 goals (plus a bonus clip) that fit certain criteria.  They’re all from games I saw live & they’re all from the Shankly/Paisley years & they all had some significance, in the context of the match/season. So there’s no Stevie G screamers, or Origi rescues (please feel free). I could’ve picked tons from over the years, but hopefully some of them will come up later..  Having said that, if nobody posts the John Barnes goal vs Coventry, then it’ll have all been for nought.

So, in chronological order, here’s 5 memorable (to me) Liverpool goals.

Chris Lawler.  Merseyside Derby. Anfield.  21/10/1970

Yes, the clip IS in black & white, so park yer jokes at the door Buster…!!

This was my first ever Merseyside Derby.  In the Paddock with me dad, uncle & a couple of mates & it was probably the day when I finally knew, for sure, that THIS was what I really wanted.  I wasn’t going to the match to please dad (which it did), but I really enjoyed it too & I wanted it for me now. This what I wanted to do….  Watch Liverpool play football. Chris Lawler scored the winning goal in this match & the place went bonkers.  I don’t really remember the goal itself, but I do remember the reaction to it inside Anfield.  The main image from this was, for me, the Kop. It was bouncing, absolute mayhem & SO loud.  I couldn’t take my eyes (or ears) off it towards the end of the game & that started the longing to stand in there, with me mates one day.

Cheers dad…..🍻

David Fairclough.  Merseyside Derby.    03/04/1976

Fully settled into the Kop by now, we had to get up early for this one. This was a (very rare) early kick off, due to the Grand National being held at Aintree that afternoon.  A tense game, that we really needed to win, to strengthen our (eventually successful) bid for the title.  David Fairclough’s 88th minute winner was a belter.  I’m convinced that a certain Diego Maradona saw this goal & practised it day after day until, ten years later, he was ready to unleash it against England in Mexico.  I think there’s even a ‘side-by-side’ vid out there somewhere & they are both noticeably similar. What a cracking goal, Davie lad.  I’m happy to rate it as the best goal, that I’ve been there to see us score.

David Fairclough.  vs St Etienne.  European Cup semi-final.  Anfield.  16/03/1977

Yep, that man again. I really don’t know where to start with this one, without ramblin on about it for ages.  They key thing was I guess, that we were as cocky as f*ck at that stage & we KNEW that we were the best team left in the competition.  If only we could get past this very good St Etienne side (who’d been to the final the previous year). Long story short, when Davie scored that goal, we just KNEW that we were gonna be European Champions for the first time. Anfield erupted & it was never in doubt from that moment on.

The nearest modern day equivalent to this that I can think of, would be the eruption inside Anfield, when Mo scored that 2nd goal against man u.  It was similar to that, we were THAT confident, even at that stage of the competition.  A truly amazing & unforgettable evening.  What a night to be on the Kop.  This, for many reasons, is my favourite Liverpool goal ever.

I love the classic commentary line on here, β€œThis now could be interesting.”

Understatement of the season mate.

That night was also the loudest that I ever heard The Kop & still get chills listening to this.

Headphone volume alert for this one (seriously) it’s loud……πŸ™‰

Kenny Dalglish.  vs F.C. Brugge.  European Cup Final.  Wembley.  10/05/1978

Ahhhhh….  Kenny Dalglish.  A name that bring a smile to the face & the memories flooding back.

What a player he was.  This was another sloppy game of football tbh, but with around 75-80% of the stadium covered in red, it was like a home game for us. Mind you, Wembley always was at the time.

The overriding image I have from this game, is Kenny leaping over the advertising hoardings & running towards us, hands held aloft, after scoring the only goal of the game.  It was the crowning moment of that season.  We’d won the EC the previous season, when Kevin Keegan had (arguably) his best and (definitely) his last game in a Liverpool shirt. But that was last year & now we had Kenny Dalglish. We believed that the Red Juggernaut was still unstoppable & a new King had been crowned.

This is a poor quality vid.  There are more out there, but mainly highlights vids.

Alan Kennedy.  vs  Real Madrid.  European Cup final.  Parc des Princes, Paris.  27/05/1981

Again, a fairly poor game of football, but who cares about that, when you’ve just been crowned Champions of Europe for the 3rd time in 5 seasons…??  Some did actually, but they got shouted down very quickly & told to stop moaning, or bog off & let others celebrate. Well, words to that effect anyway.  Our version of social media, I guess.

Barney Rubble.  We loved that guy.  When he was charging towards us, the shouts from behind the goal were 50/50 ‘shoot’ & ‘pass the f*ckin thing Barney Lad’.  Then…..BOOM…!!!

Let’s go & have a p*ss up in Paris, eh…?

The goal on this vid, is around the 2 minute mark.

Bonus Video;

Ian Rush.  Merseyside Derby.   Goodison Park.   06/11/1982

Not a specific goal itself for this one, but rather a collection.  Another Merseyside Derby, this time at Goodison Park & a fantastic team performance, but also an individual performance that became part of LFC folklore. Rush scored four, we scored 5 & they were lucky to get nil.

No further introduction needed really.

There were SO many that I could’ve picked here, even staying within the relatively limited criteria that I’d given myself.  So, let’s catch our collective breath before the final day of a fantastic domestic season & also an upcoming CL final.  What’s your best/favourite/most memorable Liverpool goal(s)…?? Post em up here, overload Disqus & make Jock happy.
