Liverpool lead Manchester City with Liverpool having won it 9 times to City’s 8 both share a record of 4 wins on the trot. Liverpool’s wins were 1981 1982 1983 1984 1995 2001 2003 2012 and the last time in 2022. For their part Chelsea have won the League Cup 5 times. In its time the Cup has been variously known as The Milk Cup to The Littlewoods Challenge Cup, The Rumbelows Cup, The Coca-Cola Cup, The Worthington Cup, The Carling Cup The Capital One Cup and now, The Carabao Cup.

In the first game Alan Kennedy scored in extra time, but West Ham replied almost immediately to take the game to a replay. Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen scored in the replay, as Liverpool came from behind to lift the trophy

Embed from Getty Images1983 v Manchester United. You’ve got it extra time again after Alan Kennedy came to the rescue late on to make it 1-1 in normal time. In extra time Ronnie Whelan scored again in a final with a delightful winner. This was the year Graham Souness stepped aside to let Bob Paisley collect the trophy in his final year as manager.
Embed from Getty Images1984 v Everton. Rather surprisingly this match went to replay after the first game ended 0-0 aet. This game became known as the friendly final as fans mixed freely on the way too and from the game. In the replay Liverpool won with a single goal from Graham Souness.

Embed from Getty Images2001 v Birmingham City. This was the first time the final was held at the Millenium stadium Cardiff. The game finished in a 1-1 draw in normal time, with a Robbie Fowler goal being matched by a 90th minute Birmingham penalty. There was no further score in extra time and, for the first time in a domestic cup final, the game went to penalties, which Liverpool won 5-4. This was the first trophy of a unique cup treble for Liverpool, who also went on to lift the FA and UEFA cups.
Embed from Getty Images2003 v Manchester United. Against all odds this game was won in normal time without a replay, extra time, penalties, toss of a coin or even rock, paper, scissors. Liverpool won 2-0 with goals from Steve Gerrard and then sealed by Michal Owen in the 88th minute. The man of the match though was Jerzy Dudek which tells you something of the story of the game.
Embed from Getty Images2012 Cardiff. Not another one! Yes this game went to penalties too after a 1-1 draw when Martin Skrtel equalised an earlier Cardiff goal. Dirk Kuyt then scored in extra time but late on Cardiff equalised to take the game once again to penalties which despite Liverpool missing the first two they went on to win 3-2.
As you can see by the number of times these finals went into extra time, replays and penalties that they are normally very close nervy affairs and there is no reason to suppose this one will be any different. (Wise words)

As it turned out the goals had all been saved for the penalty shoot out which finished 10-11 with Liverpool hero Kelleher continuing the goalkeeping goal scoring trend set by Alisson by scoring the winning penalty.
