Who was the best Captain – Hendo, Gerrard, Souness or King Kenny

DaBandit probably affected by chlorine inhalation asked a seemingly innocent question on the previous article “who was the best captain Hendo or Gerrard ?” and then he went for a lie down as the argument he started raged on into the evening. Now he has followed up by asking the question “who was the best Captain of all?

Obviously, I will do my best to remain entirely neutral in all this and merely lay out in an unbiased manner the various attributes of the candidates starting with Jordan Henderson pictured below selflessly helping others .

His main attribute is his determination which he needed to overcome all the doubters and the thankless job of following Gerrard. He has grown into the job and gained in confidence as he has seen off others who might be Captain. His own game has improved too, to such an extent that he is now one of the best players in the team and is missed when he doesn’t play. Finally, he will very shortly lift the first League title for Liverpool in over 30 years.

His biggest weakness has been that he is not thought of as an outstanding individual player like the Captains before him and perhaps isn’t known for taking the game by the scruff of the neck and winning games that looked lost.

Stevie G. His attributes are legendary. He was a truly world class player, could turn a match round single handedly and had the advantage of being from Liverpool. A real Roy of the Rovers local hero which is every young boy’s dream.

The downside is a gangsterish element in his private life and though there are various stories around his flirtation with Chelsea I suppose he didn’t actually leave. His style too seems to have been all stick and not much carrot. Oh and he never quite lifted the League trophy………….

Graeme Souness. He was the Gerrard of the team before Gerrard. He had many if not all of the same footballing qualities of Gerard and maybe even more of them. He really was the heartbeat if the team and regularly turned matches around single handedly. Whereas Gerrard was thuggish in his private life Souness brought that to the pitch 😉 That said they were different days and different rules.

His main weakness was probably his moustache but the occasional rush off blood to the head to get himself sent off came close too.

Kenny Dalglish. I have left the best player of the bunch to the end (no argument there surely?). King Kenny had it all and again was an exceptional World class player who won matches with magical moments and goals that made you gasp before exploding in celebration and left you wearing a smile and shaking your head for several minutes afterwards.

I can’t think of an obvious weakness except my personal preference for the Captain to be a defender or midfielder.

Jock struggled to get off the fence when it was a relatively simple choice between Hendo and Gerrard as this excerpt from his post shows. ” Don’t be ridiculous. How can Hendo be a better captain that Stevie was? Hendo has had to overcome doubters his entire life, that’s it. Stevie had to stop one of the biggest clubs in the world drifting into obscurity on his own.” I hope Jock will come down off that fence and make his bloody mind up now he has four players to choose from 😉

For reasons best known to himself DaBandit asked me to add a pole to the article so here goes.
