<Beautifully written Jerry , love the thinking behind it, the same as I enjoyed Jocks way of thinking. You both are right in what you say and I agree with both of you.
I will give you my perspective on it too. Stevie as you said beautifully took responsibility as he felt he needed to do it to get the others going while Hendo gives responsibility. There are similarities with the 08/09, 13/14 as well as the 18/19 seasons and the common denominator was DRAWS. My theory here is all about the Managers and how they wanted to do things. Stevie was like Rafa a man with few words who I don’t think was a great man manager and Stevie too cut a figure of being the Inspirational leader showing the way while on the other hand Klopp is a master of the art and his way of doing things is how Hendo behaves on the pitch. Hendo is a reflection of Klopp on the pitch. The manager and Captain are constantly in the ears of players giving advice, berating and appreciating the players. They live the game verbally and the body language is constantly present.
I will also stick to the 08/09 season…
1.WHile we did have some talented players playing with Stevie we never had the Depth of squad that Hendo had/has.
2. Stevie had Carra as Hendo had/ has Millie but ….the biggest but
3. Hendo had/has Virg, Gini, Robbo, MO, Mane, Lallana, Lovren….so many leaders on the pitch to call upon. We had 4 team captains’ plus others …
These are/were huge characters in the dressing room who are leaders of high quality and 5 are captains of their respective countries and some are/were vice captains.
4. Stevie had Pepe Reina in goal but that back 4 – nothing to talk about other than Carra in that defensive line which had injured players and FB’s nothing much to talk about.
…meanwhile Hendo has/had the luxury of the Best Cb in the world, Matip and Joe Gomex and the best LB and RB’s in the world Robbo and Trent.
5. Stevie had Torres who again like Stevie carried the team while we were blessed with the 3 kings who were at their prime and hardly ever injured.
6. Stevie had 3 awesome MF’s but Hendo had Fabulous and Gini and Millie who were equally impressive and a few others who stepped up.
7. If Stevie had the type of squad Hendo had we would have won the PL 3,4,5 seasons running.
8. Klopp is loyal and the players would run through a wall for him while Rafa had that bit of Pep in him , players were unhappy under him. Masch left, then Alonso and Arbeloa etc.He never managed to keep them cohesive. Klopp on the other hand has kept all the core players (with Gini the only exception) but got Thiago before he left and has added more squad depth while Rafa lost his best players and we never really got any quality players in to compensate the loss.
The biggest regret for me as a Liverpool fan will always be that Stevie never got to win the PL as a player but I hope 1 day he will return as the manager and win it but if / when Klopp leaves in 2024 I would like to see Our Pep take over from him….
And that my friends is a whole different story for us to debate about……..
