Excited, But Cautious: Thoughts on our new signings & what’s to come.

Article by GDoc.

Fellow reds,

What a summer it’s been so far:

Wirtz, Ekitike, Kerkez and Frimpong through the door, and strong rumours linking us with Alexander Isak and possibly a new center back.

On paper, this has the makings of one of the most exciting windows we’ve ever had in years. But as happy as I am, I can’t help but remain a bit cautious.

Why? Because with big signings come big expectations.

Florian Wirtz is world class potential, no question. Frimpong brings energy and technical quality. Ekitike could blossom under the right conditions. And Kerkez is a feisty, fearless option at left back. But integrating all of them into a functioning system is no small task, especially when you consider how competitive every position already is.

Take fullback for instance, Robbo and Conor Bradley won’t just roll over. They’ve worn the shirt with pride and won’t give up their spots without a fight. That competition is good, or course, but it’ll be intense.

Midfield and attack? Even fiercer.

Let’s say we go with a midfield three of Wirtz, Mac Allister, and Ryan Gravenberch; does that leave Szoboszlai and Harvey Elliott on the bench? And up top, if we sign Isak to pair with Mo and Ekitike, what happens to Gakpo?

It’s a great predicament to be inarguably the kind of problem elite teams should have, but it also raises tough questions. Who starts? Who sits? What’s the best XI for both balance and chemistry?

Here’s one possible XI to think about:

Allison,

Frimpong – Konate – VVD – Kerkez

Mac Allister – Gravenberch – Wirtz

Salah – Isak – Ekitike .

But even with that lineup, we’re leaving serious quality on the bench.

I’ll admit, I’d keep Harvey Elliott over Curtis Jones, but maybe the club is thinking about balancing the books after these signings. Either way, it’s a bold new era, and the decisions we make in preseason could set the tone for everything that follows.

What do you think? Are we getting ahead of ourselves or building a title winning squad?
