Little known fact about Liverpool FC & Man. United.

For all United followers and genuine football fans February 6 1958 was truly a heartbreaking and tragic day where a British European airways plane attempting to take off on its third attempt crashed with the Manchester United team on board at Munich airport in icy conditions 

Twenty three People died, including eight Manchester, United players and three club staff and two journalists with many more seriously injured 

Some of those killed were England internationals and the emerging bright young talent Duncan Edwards 

The Manchester United manager Sir Matt Busby was also seriously injured and not expected to survive 

Whilst he is now remembered as an United legend he was in fact an ex Liverpool FC player from 1936 to 1945 representing us in 122 official games, which could have been more had it not been for the second world war 

Our manager at the time was the great Bill Shankly who was close friends with his fellow Scot Matt Busby, Shankly was deeply affected by the tragedy and went to visit Busby in hospital after the crash to offer support and as a gesture of solidarity and friendship 

In the immediate aftermath Liverpool FC on Shankly’s advice offered five players on loan to United to assist with the rebuilding process , Shankly even offered to pay their wages himself a truly remarkable gesture 

The only other clubs who offered assistance in the form of loaning players were Real Madrid and Nottingham forest, Madrid in the end played a fundraising game to assist Manchester United 

When Bill Shankly passed away in 1981 upon hearing the news Matt Busby was deeply affected on losing a close friend even though they were rivals he  stated they were great friends and it was a great loss to football of a great man 

Fast forward to today , to a game that is filled with financial cheating, greed and corruption and you will then realise how truly magnificent and honourable the people were in the years gone by
